Wednesday 19 / Thursday 20 & Friday 21 December

Tasks to complete by the end of the week:

For those groups who haven’t made a rough cut yet you need to aim to do so by the end of the week. It would be great if you could get some audience feedback on this too. Please film your audience feedback using Photobooth – if you’re not sure how to do this then ask a group that has already used it.

Some groups have made a rough cut and gained some audience feedback on this. Your job this week is to make any adjustments in response to the feedback. If you think you’ve finished just save your video we will export the final version in the new year.

Tasks to complete over the Christmas Holiday:

1. Make sure that your blog is up to date! Use the checklist below as a guide for the minimum posts that you should have. The majority of you have 25 – 30 posts, some of you very good people have over 40 and unfortunately some of you have under 20 posts.

2. Draft ideas for your digipak and print advert. There is some general advice for the print work in the post below. You could:

  • Produce mock-ups of the layout for each piece
  • Experiment with potential fonts – use dafont http://www.dafont.com/
  • Experiment with potential colour schemes
Please remember to post anything that you do.

The two print tasks: advert & digipak

The Ancillary Print Tasks

Along with your video, these will make up a promotions ‘package’, so all your work will need to be similar in visual theme and recognisable as promoting the same artist.

There are two print tasks:

1. Cover for a digipack release of the music video you’ve made and CD track of the song you used. You will need to create a minimum of four ‘panes’: front of digipack, rear of digipack, inside cover front and inside cover rear. (A digipack is a CD release with special features such as a video clip – it usually has folded cardboard
rather than plastic packaging). Each pane should be 12 cm by 12 cm print size, with a spine.

2. A magazine advert for the digipack.

• You need to decide how big the advert is – full page, half page, or quarter. (You may need to consider the position of the artist in the marketplace and the target audience here – would an indie/folk artist be able to afford a full page advert?)
• Ideally you would not simply re-use the photo from the digipak, but rework the imagery and photography in some way.

Along with your video, this will make up a promotions ‘package’, so all your work will need to be similar in visual theme and recognisable as promoting the same artist.

The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:

  • awareness of conventions of layout and page design

  • awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size

  • accurate use of language and register

  • the appropriate use of ICT for the task set

  • appropriate integration of illustration and text

  • framing a shot, using a variety of shot distances as appropriate

  • shooting material appropriate to the task set; selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting

  • manipulating photographs as appropriate, including cropping and resizing

As with the music video there are marks available for research and planning, so don’t just post your final designs.

Post drafts of your designs: any experimentation with photos, layout, colour fonts.
Also, get some audience feedback on your drafts; you could set up a Facebook group or try something new like Tumblr

Music Video Production

This week you are editing the music video!

What you are being assessed on:

The mark scheme
The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:
  • shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot sizes and close attention to mise en scene
  • editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions, captions and other effects
  • recording and editing sound with images appropriately.
Where a candidate has worked in a group, an excellent contribution to construction is evident.

Points to remember:
Average music video has 40 / 50 shots per minute
Editing cuts match the beat of the song
Lip synching needs to be spot on
Techniques to promote artist - close ups etc....

Deadline - deadline - deadline!!!
By by next week you need to have completed a 'rough cut' of the music video. This means that you will also need to edit in your own time. The Mac Room is always available for you to use Wednesday afternoon's! Alternatively, please arrange a time / day with me.

You should also be blogging throughout the editing process. Post screen shots / mini rough cuts of your progress so far. Always, add a brief commentary to these posts - try to do as much of the following as possible:
  • Make links back to your research - generic conventions / audience research
  • Discuss suitability for target audeince
  • Make links back to theory: Goodwin, redundancy / entropy, narrative / audience theory
  • Use media technical terminology.

There really needs to be more focus on how you’re going to use the research to develop your idea further.
Remember research informs production!!!!
You should be blogging a couple of times a week at the moment.

Two very good blogs from this year:
